Elections, Insights & Stories|

Nepal’s 2026 House of Representatives election is unfolding at a critical political moment. Taking place in the aftermath of the September Gen Z movement, this election reflects a growing public demand for good governance, accountability, and a decisive fight against corruption.

For more than a decade, Tanneri Chaso has been advocating for clean elections and capable candidates. Our consistent belief is that democracy strengthens when political parties nominate ethical and competent leaders—and when voters choose them consciously. However, candidacy alone is not enough. Democracy also requires clear political commitments.

Beyond Candidates: The Need for Realistic Political Commitments

In the current election cycle, we are observing a worrying shift. Instead of presenting concrete parliamentary agendas, major political parties—including Rastriya Swatantra Party, CPN (UML), and Nepali Congress—are increasingly campaigning with the agenda of the Prime Minister.

Nepal’s parliamentary elections are not a direct contest for executive leadership. They are elections to choose lawmakers responsible for legislation, oversight, and governance. Yet the focus on personalities and power positions has overshadowed discussions on how governance will improve, corruption will be reduced, and public institutions will function more effectively.

The September Gen Z movement was not driven by personalities—it was driven by systemic concerns.

Why Election Manifestos Still Matter

While public trust in political manifestos has declined, their importance remains fundamental. Election manifestos are not mere formalities. They are:

  • A public record of political intent
  • A basis for voter choice
  • A tool for post-election accountability

In previous elections, political parties carried manifestos to citizens’ doorsteps. Even when skepticism existed, those documents provided a framework to evaluate performance. Today, the diminishing presence of manifestos risks weakening democratic accountability altogether.

From Promises to Practicable Policies

At Tanneri Chaso, we do not seek long lists of idealistic promises. Our call is for practicable, realistic, and measurable commitments—policies that can genuinely improve the daily lives of citizens and contribute to building a just and accountable state.

Our Call

Through this initiative, Tanneri Chaso aims to inform, engage, and empower citizens—especially young people—to bring agenda back into electoral discourse. We encourage voters to ask candidates and parties:

  • Where is your election manifesto?
  • What are your concrete commitments on governance and corruption?
  • How will these commitments be implemented and monitored?

Election manifestos are essential democratic instruments. Ignoring them weakens accountability. Demanding them strengthens democracy.

Let’s talk agenda. Let’s demand manifestos.
