At Tanneri Chaso, we believe democracy begins with understanding—and that young people must be equipped not just to vote, but to question, engage, and lead. On June 7, 2025, we organized a youth orientation workshop in Kathmandu under the theme “Mero Bidhayak, Mero Chaso”, aiming to build democratic engagement through legislative literacy.
The workshop brought together 16 proactive Gen Z youth, many of whom are first-time or soon-to-be voters. Guided by the belief that young citizens deserve not only a seat at the table but also the knowledge to use that seat effectively, this workshop served as a powerful introduction to Nepal’s legislative system. The day was facilitated by Mr. Dasharath Dhamala, Under Secretary of the Federal Parliament Secretariat, whose deep knowledge and engaging delivery made the session both insightful and inspiring. Participants explored how the federal and provincial parliaments work, the roles and responsibilities of parliamentarians, and why understanding these systems matters in everyday life. For many, it was the first time they had ever interacted deeply with how governance works.
One participant shared, “I used to think the parliament was a distant concept. Today, it feels closer—something I have a role in.”
By the end of the day, participants walked out not only more informed, but also more motivated. They carried with them not just facts, but a renewed sense of agency.
What made the workshop truly special was the energy in the room—curious questions, bold reflections, and honest discussions about accountability, representation, and the power of youth. Many participants shared that it was their first time engaging with the concept of legislative literacy so directly, and that the workshop changed how they see their role in Nepal’s democracy.
This wasn’t just a one-day event—it was the beginning of a journey. As part of our broader initiative to bridge the gap between youth and elected officials, this orientation workshop sets the foundation for deeper interactions with parliamentarians in our upcoming programs.
We operate through a simple, powerful approach: Inform. Engage. Empower. This workshop did exactly that—demystifying the structures of governance, creating space for meaningful youth dialogue, and empowering participants to be informed citizens who hold their leaders accountable. The workshop was not just about learning how the legislature functions; it was about empowering a new generation to ask questions, demand accountability, and see themselves as part of the democratic process.
Purak Asia supported this workshop in transforming this idea into impactful action. The future of democracy is brighter when youth are informed, engaged, and ready to lead—and this workshop was a strong step in that direction.
